Introduction

Writing is often the most challenging skill for ESL students to master. Vietnamese students in particular struggle with writing accuracy and fluency. Teachers face time constraints in providing comprehensive feedback on student writing. Automated writing evaluation (AWE) tools like Grammarly have emerged as potential solutions to provide more immediate feedback. However, research on AWE tools has focused mainly on university students, with limited studies on younger learners. This study aims to investigate the impact of Grammarly on fifth-grade Vietnamese ESL students' grammatical accuracy in writing and explore students' perceptions of using the tool.

Literature Review

Automated writing evaluation (AWE) tools have gained popularity for providing rapid feedback to support L2 writing development. Studies have found AWE can improve writing accuracy, motivation, and learner autonomy. Grammarly is one of the most widely used AWE tools, offering grammar, spelling, and style suggestions. Research on Grammarly has shown mixed results, with some studies finding it improves grammatical accuracy while others note limitations. Most Grammarly studies have focused on university students, leaving a gap in understanding its effectiveness for younger learners. This study aims to address that gap by examining Grammarly's impact on elementary ESL students' writing.

Research Methods

This mixed-methods case study involved 11 fifth-grade ESL students from a private school in Vietnam. Over 5 weeks, students completed writing tasks with and without Grammarly. Data was collected through student writing samples, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative analysis compared error rates in drafts written with and without Grammarly. Qualitative analysis explored students' perceptions of using the tool. The study aimed to determine if Grammarly significantly improved grammatical accuracy and understand students' experiences using it.

Results

Quantitative analysis revealed Grammarly significantly improved students' grammatical accuracy, particularly for verb forms, singular/plural nouns, spelling, articles, and prepositions. However, it had limitations in identifying errors related to verb tense, run-on sentences, and capitalization. Qualitative data showed students viewed Grammarly positively overall. They found it easy to use and helpful for revising their work. Students reported increased confidence in writing after using Grammarly. However, they still preferred teacher feedback over automated feedback. Some limitations noted included occasional inaccurate suggestions and inability to provide context-specific feedback.

Discussion

The findings align with previous research showing AWE tools can improve L2 writing accuracy. However, this study provides new insights on Grammarly's effectiveness for younger learners. The significant improvement in grammatical accuracy suggests Grammarly can be a valuable supplementary tool for elementary ESL writing instruction. Students' positive perceptions indicate Grammarly may increase motivation and confidence in writing. However, the continued preference for teacher feedback highlights the importance of combining AWE with human instruction. The study's results suggest Grammarly could be integrated into elementary ESL writing curricula to provide additional support and feedback.

Conclusion and Implications

This study demonstrates Grammarly can significantly improve grammatical accuracy in fifth-grade ESL students' writing. It also reveals students' generally positive perceptions of the tool. The findings have implications for integrating AWE tools like Grammarly into elementary ESL writing instruction to provide additional feedback and support. Future research could examine the long-term effects of Grammarly use on writing development and explore optimal ways to combine AWE with teacher instruction. Overall, this study contributes valuable insights on using automated writing evaluation with young ESL learners to support writing skill development.
